“Cosmetic surgery has become the new makeup.” A recent article in Time magazine highlighted the increasing popularity of cosmetic treatments and aesthetic enhancements. Cosmetic procedures are increasingly accepted and sought after. Last year alone almost 16 million cosmetic treatments were performed in the U.S. We are excited that the changes in cultural acceptance may help more men and women to look and feel their best.
Why the Shift?
The Time article explores some of the reasons behind the cultural shift toward acceptance of cosmetic procedures. There are many reasons behind the changes, but let’s explore some of the notable ones.
- Results Look More Natural: As new techniques are developed, the results of cosmetic procedures look
more natural. The Time article states, “…doctors got more nuanced and stopped making patients look like tigers with bolt-on breasts.” The results for many top cosmetic treatments (including breast augmentation, facelifts, etc.) look more natural than they did years ago when the procedures were first developed. - More Minimally Invasive Options: Minimally invasive procedures are also driving the shift. Of the 15.6 million cosmetic procedures performed last year, 13.9 million treatments were minimally invasive. These treatments include injectables (like BOTOX® or Juvéderm®), laser skin rejuvenation, etc. Minimally invasive options are often more affordable and typically don’t require a recovery period.
- More Affordable: Cosmetic treatments were once an option only for the richest patients, but they are now more affordable (or have financing options available). The Time article reminds us, “In 2005, more than two-thirds of cosmetic-surgery patients in the U.S. made $60,000 or less. Most people getting nonsurgical procedures probably made less.”
How Popular Is Cosmetic Surgery?
Cosmetic procedures are increasingly popular, but how popular are they really? A survey by MSN completed last year found that more than half of respondents were considering some type of aesthetic treatment, up from 30% just two years earlier. The number of cosmetic procedures performed in 2014 were more than double the number performed in 2000.
